Wombling Free!

Although the Wombles was eventually made into a cartoon in the late 1990s I have focused here on the stop-motion 5 minute episodes that hit tvs in the 1970s as these were still playing when I was a kid in the 1980s and are really unique shows. The Wombles were created by Elisabeth Beresford in a series of stories that she wrote beginning in 1968 with an aptly named book  'The Wombles'. In the books the Wombles were illustrated by Margaret Gordon as cute little teddy-bears, however by the time that they hit the big-screen five years later they had been re-born as the sort of furry hedgehogs without the spikes that we all know and love now!
It is a well known fact that Wombles live all over the world, however this series of adventures focuses on the Wombles that live in Wimbledon Common in London. In the 1970s they were well ahead of their time as conscientious recyclers and eco-warriors. The Wombles spend their time scouring Wimbledon Common for the 'junk' that humans leave behind and they manage to recycle this is ingenious and innovative ways to help them in their lives. There were two tv series in the 1970s, which were then followed up by a film, 'Wombling Free' in 1978 and a cartoon series in 1998 called the 'New Wombles', there were also five books in total written by Beresford.

Wombles Orinoco

Orinoco

When each Womble gets to an age where they are allowed to go out searching for flotsam and jetsom across the common, they are given a name. The Womble chooses their name by sticking a pin into Uncle Bulgaria's atlas of the world, wherever it lands that is their name. Orinoco is probably my favourite Womble, he is also seen wearing his red-scarf and he loves to have a quick nap during the day 'catching 40 winks' as he calls it followed by a sandwich!

Wombles Uncle Bulgaria

Great Uncle Bulgaria

Uncle Bulgaria is by far the oldest and wisest Womble. We beleive that Uncle Bulgaria is probably at least 300 years old, he is constantly going around saying 'if I live to be four hundred then...'
You can easily pick him out as he always wears Tartan and is often either carrying his walking stick or reading a newspaper.

Bungo

Bungo is the most boisterous or perhaps just plain bossy Womble. I assume he is named after the province in Japan called Bungo?

Wombles Madame Cholet

Madame Cholet

Madame Cholet (sometimes called Madame Nancy in foreign translations of the Wombles) is the only female Womble in the first series shown on tv, although she is later joined by Alderney in later episodes a pig-tailed Womble girl that helps Madame Cholet keep house and by Miss Adelaide a primary school teacher. If you hadn't guessed Madame Cholet is French!

Wombles Tobermory

Tobermory

After Great Uncle Bulgaria Tobermory is the second oldest Womble living in Wimbledon. He is always seen wearing his bowler hat and he is the engineer of the group (building things in his DIY shop).

Wombles Wellington

Tomsk

Tomsk is the most athletic and perhaps least intellectual Womble, that is always seen wearing the white and red running shirt. he is named after Tomsk in Russia.

Wombles Wellington

Wellington

Wellington is the opposite of Tomsk, he is the science geek. he is a very quiet an dreservced Womble whol largely lives in a world of his own. Wellington is the invenor of the group and spends most of his time in the library, he gets so wrapped up in his work we often see him missing his meals.

The Wombles

The Wombles

The idea for the Wombles came form Elisabeth Beresford's son who she often took for walks in Wimbledon Common, not being able to pronounce Wimbledon. Many of the characters are based on Beresford's life, for example Miss Aldereny is so called as this is the Channel Island where Beresford lives and Tobermory is the main city on the Isle of Mull where she used to live.
Another little bit of trivia, you can quickly tell the difference between the first and second series by the first shot of the opening titles. If a fridge door wings open then it's series one, if a tv turns on then it's series two!

The Wombles: Resources

There are quite a few good Wombles fan-sites out there on the web. Here are two of the best that I found:

The Wombles: Lyrics

Of course you will recognise the first verse of lyrics from the tv show itself. but apparently this is the full set of lyrics for the whole Wombles song - not sure if this is true or not? But it sounds good!

Underground, overground, wombling free
The Wombles of Wimbledon Common are we
Making good use of the things that we find
Things that the everyday folks leave behind

Uncle Bulgaria He can remember the days when he wasn't behind the times
With his map of the world
Pick up the papers and take 'em to Tobermory

Wombles are organised, work as a team
Wombles are tidy and Wombles are clean
Underground, overground, wombling free
The Wombles of Wimbledon Common are we

People don't notice us, they never see
Under their noses a Womble may be
We womble by night and we womble by day
Looking for litter to trundle away

We're so incredibly utterly devious
Making the most of everything
Even bottles and tins
Pick up the pieces and make 'em into something new
Is what we do

Underground, overground, wombling free
The Wombles of Wimbledon Common are we
Making good use of the things that we find
Things that the everyday folks leave behind
