So why was it called the REAL GhostBusters? Apparently the ‘Real’ got added after a title dispute with Filmation , (who were making a cartoon called the Original GhostBusters at the time). The cartoon is based on the 1984 film ‘GhostBusters’ and follows the adventures of Peter Venkman, Egon Spengler Winston Zeddmore and Ray Stantz as they track down and capture the city of New York’s ghost population.
The only real difference between the cartoon and the film is that ‘Slimer’ the slimey green ghost from the film has somehow become their pet, to provide lots of cartoon slapstick laughs. When Columbia saw how popular Slimer was with the audience, they actually re-vamped the show in 1988 as ‘Slimer and the Real GhostBusters!’ The cartoon continued the strong merchandise basis of the film, with a Marvel comic of the Real Ghostbusters and a toy product line by Kenner. there was also a new series created in 1997 called 'Extreme GhostBusters'. This takes place years after the events of the Real GhostBusters, there is just Egon, Janine and Slimer in the firehouse - and so Egon recruits 4 students to help when the ectoplasmic energy in the city begins to increase! Extreme GhostBusters isn't covered in this site as I was too old by then to watch it, but there are links in the resources section to info on the show.
Egon Spengler
Egon is the brains of the group, whereas Ray may be the most passionate, Egon is just as dedicated to the paranormal but from a more scientific perspective.
Egon's hair changes colour from brown in the film to blonde in the cartoon, other than this he is relatively unchanged. He is also the only GhostBuster that makes it through to the later series Extreme GhostBusters (although Ray does put in an appearance in the last two episodes of that series).
Ray Stantz
In the film Ray is an expert on the paranormal and is probably the one most passionate about the work the GhostBusters undertake. In the cartoon Ray is portrayed much the same, interstingly one of the alterations the producers made between the first and second series was to make Ray appear thinner! In the cartoon he is known as Ray Stanz, not Stantz I presume this is just a mistake?
Peter Venkman
Peter is the leader of the GhostBusters in the cartoon, or at least their spokesperson. In the film he is a total player, whereas in the cartoon he is still shown as a bit of a ladies man, but this is definitely and deliberately toned down!
Winston Zeddemore
In the cartoon Winston is the mechanic of the four. Winston is shown as the driver of the Ecto-1 and is also responsible for its up-keep and repairs. Other than this he is very similar to his character in the film. Again like Ray his name undergoes an inexplicable change from Zeddemore to Zedmore.
Slimer
Slimer was so popular as the GhostBusters pet/friend in the cartoon, that the shows name was changed to Slimer and the Real GhostBusters. Slimer also was given thirteen 30-minute episodes (adventures centering around Slimer) of his own which trailed immediately after the ghostbusters episodes.
Somewhere between series two and series three Slimer also gained a tail!
Janine
Janine Melnitz is the GhostBusters' receptionist and also Egon Spengler's love interest. Janine grew up in Brooklyn Heights where she still lives.
Janine doesn't take any rubbish from the guys and also quite often brings them down to earth with her sarcasm and street smarts!
The Real GhostBusters: The Lyrics
If there's somethin' strange in your neighborhood, who ya gonna call? (Ghostbusters)
If it's somethin' weird an it won't look good, who ya gonna call? (Ghostbusters)
I ain't afraid a no ghost. I ain't afraid a no ghost.
If you're seein' things runnin' thru your head. Who can you call? (Ghostbusters)
An' invisible man sleepin' in your bed. Oh who ya gonna call? (Ghostbusters)
I ain't afraid a no ghost. I ain't afraid a no ghost. Who ya gonna call? (Ghostbusters)
If you're all alone pick up the phone and call (Ghostbusters)
I ain't afraid a no ghost. I hear it likes the girls.
I ain't afraid a no ghost. Who you gonna call (Ghostbusters).
Mmm, if you've had a dose of a freaky ghost, baby, you better call Ghostbusters
Bustin' makes me feel good: I ain't afraid a no ghosts.
Don't get caught alone oh no Ghostbusters
When he comes through your door, unless you've just got some more I think you better call Ghostbusters.
Who you gonna call (Ghostbusters)
Who you gonna call (Ghostbusters)
Ah, I think you better call (Ghostbusters)
I can't hear you. Who you gonna call? (Ghostbusters)
Louder! Ghostbusters!
Who you gonna call (Ghostbusters)
Who you can call (Ghostbusters)
