Cartoons from the 1980s and 1990s

The Pirates of Dark Water! at the Cartoon Archive

ChungaLunga!

The Pirates of Dark Water was simply one of the best cartoons made in the 1990's and it is a tragedy that the storyline was never finished. Just like Dungeons and Dragons before it, the Pirate sof Darkw Water ceased production before the fantastic storyline was finished. The basic plot was that on the world of mer ( a planet largely covered in water, with numerous islands) the water and life is being systematically destroyed by a substance called Dark Water. During the course of the twenty-one episodes that were made, we find thatthe Dark Water was released by a creature that lives at the bottom of the ocean, called the Dark-Dweller, who has released the Dark Water so that he can colonise the surface of Mer and turn all of its occupants zombie ike slaves called Dark Disciples.
The hero fo the piece is a young man called Ren, who lived in a lighhouse with his fotermother Jenna. All changes for Ren, when one day he rescues a drowning man, who reveals himself to not only be Ren's father, but also advises Ren that he is the prince of the largest land on Mer called 'Octopon'. Before he dies, Primus, Ren's father tasks Ren witha quest to find the thirteen treasuresof Rule, the onyl things that can push back the Dark Water that is encraoching upon the planet, and defeat Mer once and for all. On his quest Ren has some friends of dubious backgrounds, but with heartd of gold to help him. Firstly there is Niddler, the winged monkey; then there is Ioz a roguish pirate and finally Tula a serving wench at a bar, who also turns out to be an ecomancer ( a sort of good-witch type person).
The Pirates of Dark Water was made by Hanna-Barbera, but unfortunately got cut after its twenty-first episode, rumours abound as to why this was, but I suspect it just came down to production costs and timesales versus audience figures and other cartoons in production. Even though we only saw Ren and his friends get hold of the first eight treasures of Rule, the Pirates of Dark Water still has a masive fan-base, and you never know someone may come along and finish off the series yet!

Pirates of Dark Water Ren

Ren

Ren is the hero fo the cartoon, he has been entrusted by his father, Primus, the King of the largest land in Mer, called Octopon, to fight against the Dark-Dweller and push back the Dark Water. Ren was given a compass by his father's friend (a dragon named Alomar) which helps him to locate the thirteen treasures of Rule. Ren also had a broken sword that belonged to his father, althoughhe used this as a weapon, this was never made whole during the 21 episodes that were made.
ps. he also used to say 'ChungaLunga!' alot - when he was shocked.

Tula - Pirates of Darkwater

Tula

Tula is introduced to us as a serving wench at the bar in which Ren meets Ioz for the first time. Tula sneaks aboard the Wraith and becomes part of the crew by proving herself adept at sailing. Tula is very strong-willed, she seems to havea crush on Ren, althoguh she doesn't let him know this. Tula also later gains the powers of an ecomancer, under the training of her mentor Teron. This gives her powers to communicate with creature and wildlife, and use th epowers of nature. Because of this she often proves herself an invaluable memeber of the crew.

Ioz - Pirates of Dark Water

Ioz

Ioz is a gold loving pirate thorugh and through. It is Ioz that obtains the Wraith for the crew, by stealing it from Joat another sea-captain while it is docked. Ioz often gets himself and others into trouble due tohis love of gold, but he is courageius and a good friwend to Tula and Ren - he just about puts up with Niddler! Towards the end of the series we are also introduced to Ioz's sister Solia.
Ioz we find out used to work for Bloth, but left the crew when he found out how evil his captain really was.

Niddler - Pirates of DarkWater

Niddler

Niddler is a bit of a comedy character, he loves to eat and in particular he will do anythig for Minga-Melons! Niddler starts the series as a slave working for Bloth, but he befirends Ren and helps him to escape. Later on he also works with Ren and the crew to free the rest of his race that live on the island of Pandawa from their slave-masters. The show originally aired as a five episode mini-series called 'Dark Water'. when it was built upon and re-released as part of the 21 episodes of 'The Pirates of DarkWater' one f the big things that changed was Niddler's voice - as Frank Welker took over the role form Roddy McDowall). For a full list of the changes between the mini-series and the final 21 episdoes, see here:

Bloth - Pirates of Dark Water

Bloth

Bloth is the Captain of the Maelstrom. Bloth wishes to get hold of the thirteen treasures of Rule, so that he can have dominion over Mer. Bloth kept Ren's father a prisoner on the Maelstrom for 17 years, and now he seeks to capture Primus' son. The Maelstrom is a huge ship, made of leviathan bone, andin its depths is an evil monster called the Constrictus to whom unlucky priosoners are fed!
At the beginning of series two Bloth teams up with Morpho, the servant of the Dark Dweller, to hunt down Ren and the treasures. Bloth wants gold and power and Morpho needs the treasures to set his master free.

The Dark Dweller - Pirates of Darkwater

The Dark Dweller

The Dark Dweller is the creature that lives at the bottom of the ocean in Mer. The Dark Dweller is trying to take over the world by covering it with Dark Water, and turning the inhabitants into zombies called Dark Disciples. At the moment the treasures that Ren is collecting are holding the Dark Dweller at bay, but if the Dark Dweller's servants were to get hold of the treasures that would be the end for the poeple of Mer.
We meet many of the Dark Dweller's servants during the show, including his right-hand man Morpho, who teams up with Bloth, and obe of his creatures called the Kiroptus in 'the Beast and the Bell'.

The Pirates of Dark Water: Episode Guide

11. The Collection: Ioz is aboard a ship belonging to Scorian a captain that previously stole a treasure map belonging to Ioz. Ioz has found out that Scorian has the treasure from this map aboard his ship. Unfortunately a wizard called Garen overheard their argument, and he has his eyes on the treasure. Garen specialises in capturing pirate ships, and miniaturising them into bottles. Eventually by hiding in the treasure chest that Garen demands from Scorian for the ship to be returned to full size, Ioz manages to rescue the crew and all the other ships that have been miniaturised.
12. The Little Leviathan: The crew find a baby leviathan (whose skin cannot be harmed by Dark Water) trapped in a pool of Dark Water unable to escape. Teh crew rescue the Leviathan, which acts a bit like a baby puppy, eating their Minga Melons, chewing the sail ropes and almost eating the compass. Bloth captures the crew, they subsequently escape. Meanwhile oneof Bloth's crew rides on the Leviathan's back to get the seventh treasure which is located behind some Dark Water. The Wraith appears, helped by the baby Leviathan's family, Ren grabs the treasure back from Matus and the baby and its family fight off Bloth and the Maelstrom.
13. The Darkdweller: The crew are celebrating as they have located al of the seven treasures that Primus' captains had originally hidden around Mer. During a raid from Bloth, Tual is knocked into the Dark Water, and Ren is captured by Bloth. Ren is so dis-heartened from losing Tula that he gves up completely on his quest. However, after seeing  a visionof Tula, he helps Ioz and Niddler escape, using the seven treasuresthey venture into the under-water realm ofthe Dark-Dweller. Ioz gets re-captured by Bloth. Meanwhile Ren and Niddler see through the Dark-Dweller's attempts to gain the treasures by disguisng himself as first Tula then Primus, they rescue Tula and during the subsequent confusion caused by the appearance of Ren, Tula, Niddler and the chasing Dark-Dweller at the Maelstrom, Ioz also escapes and joins his friends. They use the combined power of the seven treasures to send the Dark-Dweller back into the depths, and become even more determined to find the remaining six treasures so that they can beat him for good!
14. The Dark Disciples: So this episode is the beginning of the second season. Ren and the crew return to Octopon, and find that it has fallen into ruin and is being ruled over by a servant of the Dark-Dweller called Morpho. Morpho has transformed the inhabitants of Octopon into his servants called Dark-Discilpes. These capture the crew and deliver them to Morpho, luckily they are subsequently rescued by Ren's foster mother Jenna. At the light-house which was Jenna and Ren's home, Ren has a vision of Primus, which tells him to place the stones in a secret room in the lightouse. The stones, lock themselves into the walls and emit a beam of light that banishes the Dark Water from that area of Octopon, creatinga safe-haven from the Dark-Dweller. When this happens Morpho, who was chasing Ren falls from the lighthouse, he is rescued by Bloth, and the two decide to team up against Ren.
15. The Ghost Pirates: Ioz is told a legend abut a ghost-ship which contains hidden treasure. Later when Ren and the crew are trying to escape frm Bloth amongst some fog they come across the ghost ship. Ioz sneaks on board, where he finds he has been tricked, and that Cressa the Captain of the ship wants to make Ioz her first mate. After a number of failed rescue attempts, Ioz is beginnign to turn into a ghost. Tula realises thatthe only way Ren cn fight the ghosts is by becoming one himself. Tula splits Ren's spirit from his body, Ren's spirit goes to fight Cressam and rescue Ioz. Ren only just gets back to his bodyin time, before it withers and dies without his spirit. Ren promises Ioz he will not tell Tula that it was Ioz's greed that got them into this situation.
16. The Dagron Master: Ren falls into the ocean whilst going into a storm to try and get a treasure. Niddler goes in after him to try and rescue him, and so both end up ship-wrecked on an Island in the Lightning Coast.  the islandis inhabited by a strange creature called Onda, who tells the pair that he is the Dagron Master. Onda tricks Ren into wearing a suit of armour that slowly turns him into a Dagron. Meanwhile Bloth and Mantus come to buy some Dagrons from Onda, and unwittingly buy Ren and two other Dagrons.
Niddler brings Ioz and Tula to Onda's island, where he warns them of Onda's tricks. Ioz takes Onda's gold and finds out that if he puts the armour onto Ren inside-out it wil transform him back. Ioz and Tula sneak aboard the Maelstrom, find and rescue Ren and the other two Dagrons. They return the three of them to human form and Ioz givesthe other two men, Onda's gold so that they can go and start a new life! The armour is thrown into the sea.
17. The Game Players of Undaar: This episode always reminded me of something from Jason and the Argonauts or Sinbad. Bloth and Ren are captured by two creatures that introduce themselves as the Game Players of Undaar. In order to save their respective crews the two enemies must survive their way through a perilous 'game' chained together. The two are thrownonto an island, and must make it to the finish alive, the island is covered with various traps and also the Game Player's own warriors - the Korb. Bloth and Ren work together to complete the game and defeat the Korb, but at numerous times Bloth tries to double-cross Ren. As they finished the course the Game Players set both vessels free. However they damage Bloth's steering as punishment for his un-chivalrous behaviour, so that the Qraith can escape. During this episde we also see a bit further how valiant ren is, at one point he could have left Bloth to die in quick-sand, but despite the fact that he had double-crossed him numerous times, Ren still rescues him.
18. The Pandawa Plague: On the shore of Octopon the compass beams a ray of light at a struggling figure in the water. Renn, Tula and Ioz rescue the figure, who is the Queen of the Monkey Birds. the Queen advises that a plague has over-taken th eisland and she fears for her daughter's (who is currenlty just an egg - but also the future queen) safety. Ioz and Tula stay behind to look after the Queen, while Renand Niddler fly to Pandawa. Once they are there they find that Jargas the old slave-master is poisoning the Minga-Melons and this is what is causing the plague. Niddler is turned 'evil' by one of the melons and reveals the location of the egg to Jargas, who has meanwhile captured Ren. Luckily Ioz, Tula and the Queen arrive. Ren frees himself, finds an anti-dote, cures some of the monkey birds who then set about curing the rest. Tula slows the bad-guys down with a wind, whilst the Queen, Ioz and Ren head to the cave where the baby (now hatched) is living. Tula rescues the baby from Jargas, and the cured monkey-birds turn up and give him the boot!
19. Sister of the Sword: A mysterious lady rescues Ren from some pick-pockets in the port of Kaliner, when they get back to the Wraith she turns out to be Ioz's sister! Solia asks the crew if they will help her seek some treasure she is chasing, they decline as they are on their own quest. Unfortunately once she has departed they find that she has nicked some gold and most importantly the compass!
Niddler spots Solia with Konk, who has agreed to help her find her treasure and the crew follows her to the island of Arakna, where there are giant spiders lurking everywhere! Solia gets trapped and Ren rescues her, then Ioz gets trapped and Solia rescues him - finally they all go after Konk who during all of this has run off with the gold and compass! They get the compass back, Ioz apologises to his sister for leaving her as a child and they make up.
20. The Soul Stealer: A sooth-sayer tells Bloth that the best way to get the treasure is to become like Ren himself. Morpho creates a body-switching potion that swaps Ren and Bloth, and also swaps Niddler and Konk. Meanwhile, Joat - who was the owner of the Wraith, before Ioz stole it, tracks down Ren (now Bloth) and Ioz and wants his ship back!
21. The Living Treasure: This is the last episode of The Pirates of Dark Water ever made, as it was unfortunately stopped before the story-line was finished. Previously the crew had been told that because Ren had put the first seven treasures into the secret chamber of the lighthouse in Octopon, that the remaining treasures would be harder to find as they began to transform. The crew find the eighth treasure in this episode, and they finally understand what this prophecy meant. The eighth treasure has transformed into a small blue creature! Even worse than this it lives on an island of warrior woman, that capture Ren and Ioz as prisoners, but at the same time offer Tula a job! And here unfortunately is where the story ends....

1. The Quest: Ren rescues an old man (Primus) who has recently escaped from Lord Bloth's ship. It transpires that Ren is the man's son and is the Prince of Octopon! Primus dies, but with his dying breath tells Ren to seek out a friend called Alomar. Ren is kidnapped by Niddler and taken to Lord Bloth, Niddler then befriends Ren and helps him to escape from the Constrictus pit into which he has been thrown in the bowels of Bloth's ship the Maelstrom. Following his escape from Bloth, Ren forms a crew of 'misfits' to seek out the thirteen treasures of Rule, before Bloth finds them. He is equipped on his quest with a compass given to him by Alomar, that will help to locate the treasures, he also has the broken sword that was his father's, given to him by his foster mother, Jenna. They find the first treasure.
2. Dishonour: Ren sets out with his new crew on the Wraith, a ship stolen for him by Ioz. The crew is Ioz, Ren, Tula and Niddler. They havea run-in with Bloth and the mighty Maelstrom ship, to escape him they sail to the island of Atani (The Island of the Pale Warriors) who are Bloth's enemies. Tula and Ioz decide to try and take some of the treasures of the Atani, but the king Probic finds them out and they are dishonoured. Ren offers to take their punishement and for this show of honour, the king shows compassion. Meanwhile Konk (a short pirate that works for Bloth) has un-beknown to the others secretly stowed on board the Wraith. Seeing his opportunity he holds the King's life as ransom for the compass and the first treasure that Ren and the others have found. Konk manages to steal the Compass from Ren and also gains the first treasure of Rule - not a great start to their Quest!
3. Break Up: In this episode we find out Niddler's background and how the monkey race that lives on Mer came to be enslaved. The crew have followed Konk to the island of Pandawa (where the monkey race live) and Niddler begs the crew not to go there, as this is where he was enslaved to Bloth. This is quitea busy episode! Ren helps the enslaved monkey queen who is dying of thirst, Niddler sparks off a rebellion against the slavers and the monkey race over-throw them. During the rebellion Tula and Ioz believe that Ren and Niddler have been killed, and so they continue to pursue Konk, meanwhile as as sign of thanks from the monkey queen Niddler and Ren are given the second treasure of Rule. Just as they are setting out from Panadawa, Bloth and his crew appear and re-capture the pair.
4. Betrayal: Luckily for Ren and Niddler, when they are captured they are so dirty (and Bloth is so distracted by training his Dagron riders) that Bloth doesn;t realise who he has captured! Ren and Niddler get thrown into the bowels of the Maelstrom with the other prisoners, where they meet a friend of Ren's father's called Avagon. Avagon tells Ren how Bloth crushed the land of Octopon, when he found out that Ren's father had given the first seven treasures of Rule to his seven most trusted captains to scatter across the land. In the meantime Ioz and Tula follow Konk and the Lugg Brothers to Zoolie's Gaming House in Janda-Town. They quickly deefeat the trio and recover the treasure adn the compass. The episode ends with Ren looking up from the depths of the Maelstrom to see Tula apparently betraying him and the crew by offering to give the compass for money!
5. Victory: It's ok! We find out that Tula isn't betraying Ren after all, she is using the treasure as means to get on the Maelstrom, where she is trying to rescue Terron, a fellow Ecomancer, that is being held captive by Bloth. Teron however tells Tula that she is too late, the Dark Water has destroyed their native isalnd of Andorus, and that her only hope is the son of Primus (Ren) and trying to locate all the treasures. Meanwhile Ioz and Zoolie turn up in the Wraith intent ongetting th etreasures back from Bloth and also catching up with Tula who they currenlty beleive to be a traitor. After a lot of fighting etc. Ren, Tula, Teron, Niddler are all on the Wraith sailing toward the third treasure, now that they are all united in a conviction to get the treasures and destroy the Dark Water.
6. Andorus: This episode sees Tula realise her powers as an ecomancer. Tula and Teron fly to Andorus, which has been destroyed by the Dark Water, they also find an evil creature called the Blight that has been brought back to life by the Dark Water. Tula under teron's guidance brings the Viva Tree of Andorus back to life and in so doing pushes back the Dark Water. Meanwhile Ren goes beneath the Viva tree, guided by Tula to find a treasure which the compass has revealed.  Ren gets the treasure, is saved from the Blight by Tula and after a breif fight with Bloth the crew sail off into the sunset! Leaving Teronto finish the restoration of Andorus.
7. A Drop of Darkness: This episode sees Ren and the crew recovering the fourth Treasure of Rule from the bottom of the ocean. The crew also meet an alchemist called Cray who is trying to get a sample of the Dark Water to study it. Cray reveals that she was a girl friend of Primus' before he met Ren's mother and she still loves him deeply. Cray adds a drop of Dark Water to one of her potions, she drinks it to make herself young and then tries to seduce Ren! She then goes a bit crazy when it doesn't work, trapping the crew and offering to give the compass & treasures to Bloth if he will perform a marriage between her and Ren. Finally realizing she has lost the plot, Cray destroys her citadel to rescue Ren and the crew, giving him her wedding bouquet as she dies crushed under the rubble (which contains the treasures and the compass!). Another great, action-packed episode!
8. The Beast and the Bell: The compass draws Ren to an area in the sea where a creature appearing to Primus appears, telling Ren that he doesn't need to seek the treasures anymore, instead he just needs to go to the isalnd of Banjamaar and ring the Bell of First Sound, which will destroy the Dark Water in one go. Tula warns against this, as her ecomancer spider-sense is tingling. Lo and behold Ren rings the bell and it actually releases a moster called Kiroptus who has tricked Ren. They eventually re-trap Kiroptus, but the important plot development here, is that Konjit the leader of the people of Banjamaar tells Ren that there is a creature called the Dark-Dweller (for whom Kiroptus works) that lives at the core of Mer, it is the Dark Dweller that originally scatered the treasures of Rule and that has released the Dark Water.
9. Panacea: The crew are trying to get the fifth treasure which is located on the top of a spire on the edge of Miragon. The treasure is defended by a giant worm creature. The crew are offered help by a man called Slaggon, who calls himself a bio-transmuter'. Unfortunatelt for them, Slaggon also is willing to helop Bloth, who is hot on their tails. After the crew are helped by one of Slaggon's 'enhanced creatures' called Roulette to get th etreasure, Slaggon has to return to Bloth empty handed. Slaggon finds himself the newest member of Bloth's crew, and Roulete remains behind to help the other creatures that Slaggon had 'enhanced' and imprisoned.
10. King Niddler: The crew are seeking the sixth treasure in an insland of fog. As usual niddler splits off in search of Minga-Melons! He is found by a group of wingless monkey birds (called Mobo) that believe Niddler is their king. They are not too impressed when he chickens out of fighting the vicious Feryx beast (that is also guarding the sixth treasure of Rule). A female Mobo called Zena helps him to defeat the Feryx, before he leaves the island with the crew Niddler tells them that she should be their Queen. Tula hugs Zena to say farewell and in so doing she gives Zena a pair of wings using her ecomancer powers.
