Inspector Gadget
Gagdet has a number of gadgets such as binoculars, an umbrella, a propellar etc. about his person which he activates by shouting 'Go-Go-Gadget Boots! for example to activate his roller-skates. What usually then happens is that either the wrong gadget appears or the right gadget appears but it malfunctions!
Gadget is a well-intentioned but not very bright inspector, who manages to succeeed despite himself, largely due to his two guardian angels Penny and Brains. In the first few episodes of the series Gadget is depicted as a competent cop, but as the episodes progress he becomes more and more incompetent and unaware of the 'real' activity around him, relying almost entirely on luck or on Penny and Brains! It's often said that his character is based on that of Maxwell Smart from Get Smart! He also likes to say 'Wowsers!' alot, and I mean alot!
Most of the time when on assignment Gadget will end up be-friending the real M.A.D. agents and villifying poor old Brains, who is often in disguise and trying to help him! Gadget also owns a cool van that transforms into a high-speed police car, this is called the Gadget mobile and is possibly packed with more Gadgets than Gadget! |
Penny and Brains
Penny (Gadget's niece) and Brains (her dog) are the real crime-fighters and the ones truly responsible for Gadget's success. Penny has two key tools to help her solve mysteries and these are her electronic book (which literally looks like a book, but acts as a supercomputer, breaking codes, solving puzzles etc.) and secondly her knight-rider style watch with which she communicates with Brains.
Brains is the actual field agent of the duo, he often has to go out in the field to protect Gadget, dressed up in ludicrous costumes and wearing a headset to communicate with Penny. As you probably guessed he's smarter than the average canine. Brains also seems to be the one that suffers the brunt of the injuries and calamaties from the adventures - he deserves a medal! Interesting trivia, Penny is called Sophie in the French version and Karen in the Israeli version of the cartoon - don't know why! |
Dr Claw and MAD Cat
I may be wrong but I don't think we ever really see much more of Claw than this! He speaks in a very - gruff/evil voice and is often heard to say 'Next time Gadget !! Next Time!!'
He is the main bad guy in the cartoon and runs the M.A.D. empire, which Gagdet unwittingly foils time after time.
Most episodes will end with Dr Claw saying 'Next time Gadget! Next Time' then we cut to Quimby congratulating Gadget, finally Penny will deliver a moral lesson or safety tip to Gadget (and the audience) He-Man / Captain Planet style. |
Chief Quimby
Chief Quimby is Gadget's direct boss and he things that Gadget is a real up and comer! Always attributing Penny's success to Gadget. Each episode will start with Quimby in disguise (crazy disguises!) giving Gadget a letter. The letter will contain Gadget's assignment, and will then self-destruct in five seconds. Every time without fail, Gadget will throw the letter back to Quimby by mistake and it wil explode in Quimby's face e.g. Quimby is hiding in a dustbin and Gadget throws it in there etc. |
