The Ewoks! at the Cartoon Archive

Beechawawa!

Now that I look back on it a lot of what I remember being in the Ewoks cartoon was actually from the Gummi Bears, but never the less the Ewoks is still  a fun cartoon to watch even if the target audience is about 5 yrs old! Following on from the Ewoks' appearance in Star Wars VI: Return of the Jedi it quickly became obvious that people loved these furry little creatures and wanted to see more. A couple of straight to TV Ewok centred films were made in the two years following the release fo Retun of the Jedi (The Ewok Adventure and Ewoks:The Battle for Endor) and then it was only a matter of time until we saw actions figures and cutesy cartoons a-plenty.
The Ewoks cartoon lasted for two series, the first series called 'Ewoks' aired in 1985 and was a stand-alone 30minute cartoon. Tjhe second series called 'The Adventures of the Ewoks' aired in1986/87 was paired up with another cartoon called Droids (about the Star Wars robots) into the 'Ewoks Star Wars Droids Adventure hour'. Eventually the thirty minute cartoons got split into seperate 11 minute stories and were re-released under the banner 'The All-New Ewoks', but essentially there were only ever these two series of material.
The biggest change between the cartoon Ewoks and the Ewoks in the films are that the cartoon Ewoks speak English (rather than strange grumbles and chirps) and their enemy is a cartoon race of people called the Duloks, who are always up to mischief and also the slightly more evil Morag the Witch.

Wicket W Warrick

Wicket W. Warrick

Wicket is the hero of the cartoon, he and his friends are meant to be young teenagers ni the forest of Endor (where they all live). Wicket was also the two spin-off tv films that appeared before the cartoon. Wicket also has a pet horse/donkey thing called Baga and a baby sister that he has to look after called Winda.

Chief Chirpa

Chief Chirpa

The chief is the leader of the tribe that lives at Bright Tree Village on the Forest Moon of Endor. He is Princess Kneesa's father and he also had a nother daughter (Asha) and a wife, both of whom he lost when Kneesa was still a baby. Chirpa leads the Ewok council of elders and so is the de Facto leader of the Ewok tribe, he also physically likes to get involved in the fighting and often actually leads the Ewoks troops against Dullok attacks.

Princess Kneesa

Princess Kneesa

Princess Kneesa is one of Wicket's closest friends and the main female lead (heroine) of the cartoon. Throughout the story we find that her mother was died when she was a baby, her sister was also lost during the same attackon the Ewok tribe. However Kneesa's sister returns to the tribe after being raised by wolves many years later!

Paploo

Paploo

Paploo is Kneesa's cousin (therefore Chirpa's nephew) and he occassionally joins the younger Ewoks on their adventures.
In the cartoon Paploo is your basic hero/warrior, he is courageous, strong-hearted and brave. A good role model for the younger Ewoks.

Malani

Malani

Malani is even younger than Wicket and firends. Malani is Teebo's younger sister and as such he doesn't really like her hanging round with him and his friends. Malani also has a massive crush on Wicket!
As a result she spends most of her time playing with the younger Ewoks Nippet, Wiley and Winda, whilst wishing sh ewas with Wicket and friends.

Teebo

Teebo

Teebo is Wicket's best-friend, talking about crushes, he is followed around lovingly everywhere he goes by Latara (Princess Kneesa's best-friend, sorry couldn't fit her picture in as well!).
Teebo is an apprentice to Master Logray who is the tribe's medicine man. In typical cartoon fashion he is learning to carry out magic tricks, but they never quite work the way he expects.

Weechee Warrick

Weechee Warrick

Weechee Warrick is a strong Ewok warrior (very much like Paploo but perhaps more aggressive). Weechee is Warrick's eldest brother, but there is lots more of his family in the cartoon albeit for brief appearances who's pictures I couldn't fit into the page, but they are essentially his mother Shodu Warrick, his father Deej Warrick (another warrior) his other brother Widdle Warrick (who is a comedy character, referred to as Willy Warrick in the second series for some reason) and his little sister Winda Warrick.

Logray

Logray

Logray is the tribe's shaman or medicine man. He is a member of the council of elders and acts as a confidante and old friend to Chief Chirpa. Whenever any age old wisdom or folklore or magic is required then Chief Chirpa is your man, he knows all of the Ewok tribes history and legend and is passing his knowledge onto Teebo.

King Gorneesh

King Gorneesh

Ok so now for the bad-guys! The Ewoks main enemy on Endor are the Dulloks, theseare led by none otherthan king Gorneesh. Although they are bad-guys they are of the more dim-witted, bullyingsdtyle of bad-guys rather than the pure heart of darkness that you get from some baddies. Often their schemes go wrong and they are also always foiled to comedy effect by the Ewoks.

Morag

Morag the Witch

In terms of the real baddy of the cartoon it is definitely Morag the Witch. She will often coerce the Dulloks into doing her bidding, wittingly or unwittingly and she has really got it out for the Ewoks!
Morag is a Tulgah witch who lives in a castle fortress on Mount Thunderstone (on Endor). Morag has an artefact which she stole from the Ewoks in her staff, called the ShadowStone and this is often used to create magical attacks against the Ewoks, however Logray and the Ewok soldiers manage to keep her at bay.
There is a really detailed page of information about Morag here on the StarWars Wookiepedia!

The Ewoks: Resources

  • This is a really good site that has built an Ewoks family tree - from both the films and the cartoon!
  • This video was on YouTube, it isn't the official Ewoks Intro that I remember, maybe either someone has put it together themselves or it from series 2?

The Ewoks: Lyrics

We are the e-e-e-e-eeeewoks
We're the spirits from the forest wood

We are the e-e-e-e-eeeewoks
We're the spirits from the forest wood

We are brave, we are bold, like the story-tellers told
We are strong and we will fight and we will stand up for our rights!

We are the e-e-e-e-eeeewoks
We're the spirits from the forest wood

 We are the e-e-e-e-eeeewoks
We're the spirits from the forest wood

Yes we're at home on the ground and we house upon the trees
When we want to fly out high we just sail upon the breeze

We are the e-e-e-e-eeeewoks
and we're one big happy family!

We are the e-e-e-e-eeeewoks
One big happy family!
